If a retired member dies

It is important to notify us of a death of a pensioner as soon as possible so we can stop pension payments and avoid overpayments that may need to be paid back.

To tell us of a death, please call our helpline on 0131 529 4638. When you phone us we will need to know the following:

  • the name of the persons who has died
  • their date of death
  • their National Insurance number if you know it
  • if they have dependants - widow/widower/partner or dependant children?
  • the contact details of the next of kin
  • a contact address and telephone number for any further queries

We will need to see copies of the death certificate, the birth and marriage certificates of the widow/widower or civil partnership certificate and the birth certificates of any dependant children.

You can send us copies of these certificates as long as they are certified as true copies. To do this give the copy and original to someone who will then write on the copy - certified as a true copy and sign their name. You can then send us the signed copy of the certificates. Alternatively you can come into our offices and we can take a copy of your certificates for you.
