Scheme overview

The new Firefighters' Pension Scheme (FPS) took effect from 6 April 2006.

All regular firefighters appointed after 6 April 2006 automatically become made members from their start date but you can choose to opt out by contacting your payroll section.

Scheme Highlights

The 2006 Firefighters Pension Scheme is open to all firefighters who joined on or after 6 April 2006. Main features
  • contribution rate of 8.5%
  • normal pension age of 60
  • ability to swap up to 25% of pension for tax free lump sum
  • pension is based on final pay and pensionable membership
  • ill health retirement
  • death in service cover at rate of three times pensionable pay
  • pension provided for spouse, civil partner or nominated partner
  • children's pensions

Annual benefits statement

Each year you will receive an estimate of pension benefits to help you plan your retirement.  The statements will be issued through internal mail direct around December each year.

Death grant and survivor's pension

If you are married or are in a registered civil partner in the event of your death a lump sum or pension may be payable to your dependants.  We need to see a copy of your certificate. 

The copy needs to be certified by having a manager write 'this is a true copy' then dating and signing it.  Please then send the certified copy to us at Lothian Pension Fund, 3/3 Waverley Court, 4 East Market Street, Edinburgh EH8 8BG.
