» View pages in this section

If you joined the LGPS before 1 April 2009, your benefits for membership upto 1 April 2009 are calculated using the previous Scheme.

For LGPS membership built up to 31 March 2009 your deferred benefits are:

  • an annual pension based on 1/80th of your final pay
  • and an automatic tax-free lump sum of three times your pension.

The pension and automatic lump sum are based on your LGPS membership before 1 April 2009 and your final pay.

You can also exchange part of your pre April 2009 pension for extra lump sum at the rate of £12 for every £1 of pension you give up.   Your pension is payable at age 65.

Cost of living rises

Your deferred benefits increase every year in line with the cost of living whilst they are deferred. Your pension will continue to receive cost of living increases every year once it is paid to you.
