Tax codes for those receiving a pension

HMRC have advised the Fund that they have had an issue with some tax codes for pension payments made since April 2018.  They have now corrected the problem and issued new tax codes where necessary from 11/07/2018.  If you have a query about your tax code, please contact HMRC direct on 0300 200 3300 or sign up to view your details at www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account.

Your data

From May 2018, new laws changed the way organisations handle people’s data. Changes included an update on the lawful basis for processing data, how long organisations keep personal data and the right to be informed about what is being done with your data. The Fund’s basis to hold data is to administer the pension fund and pay pensions when they are due. It is therefore necessary for the Fund to hold your personal information to process pensions.  You can read the new policy at www.lpf.org.uk/

Lothian Pension Fund interim response to the Scottish LGPS Scheme Advisory Board’s Consultation on Structure

The Pensions Committee, at its meeting on 26 September, agreed its interim response that option 4, merger of funds into one or more new fund, was the preferred option.  Read the interim response here.

Responsible investment

Lothian Pension Fund is a multi-employer pension scheme, which has a fiduciary duty to its members and employers.  Accordingly, the Fund does not disinvest from companies for purely non-financial reasons, not least because this could lead to legal challenge.

The Pensions Committee and Pension Board do, however, take their stewardship responsibilities seriously and they discuss them regularly.  The Fund believes that its policy on responsible investment, which involves engaging with companies, is preferable to a policy of divestment.  This is because engagement, particularly in collaboration with other asset owners, can lead to positive change in corporate behaviour and strategy.  The Fund considers that divestment is less ‘responsible’ in the sense that if all the responsible investors (those that typically engage with companies) divest their shares, then there will be no owners challenging boards on their strategies.

The Fund’s investment team does look at all issues in assessing the risks across its portfolios and so over time does naturally divest from particular stocks from time to time.  Importantly, the Fund’s team does this with an appropriately long-term horizon, in line with the long duration of its liabilities and its policy of engagement.

More information on the Fund’s policy on responsible investment and engagement activity can be found on our website at www.lpf.org.uk/info/68/responsible_investment.
