Lump Sum Grant

If you die while holding deferred benefits, a lump sum death grant may be payable to your estate or nominated beneficiary.

The amount received depends on when you left the Scheme:

  • Before 1 April 1998: Lump sum equal to your retirement grant
  • 1 April 1998 to 31 March 2009: Three times your deferred annual pension
  • On or after 1 April 2009: Five times your deferred annual pension.

If you hold more than one deferred LGPS pension (and are not an active member at the time of death), a death grant may be payable from each.

However, if you're both an active and deferred member at the time of death, only one grant is payable, whichever is higher between the death in service lump sum, and the deferred lump sum(s).

Important information:

  • If a nomination is made for a child under the age of 16 and the lump sum exceeds £5,000, it must be paid via the Accountant of Court until the child reaches age 16
  • If LPF can’t pay the lump sum to nominees within two years of death, it will instead be paid to the executors of the estate.
